PGH

Philippine General Hospital

As was the case elsewhere, Pediatric Surgery in the Philippine General Hospital started as an offshoot of General Surgery. Dr. Roman Ibay Jr. and Dr. Pedro Reyes paved the way for the creation of a training program in pediatric surgery. Dr . Alfredo Acosta was the first graduate in 1974, followed by Dr. Josefina Almonte in 1978. Thereafter, the program was formally structured into a two-year curriculum, with Dr. Wilma Albulario- Baltazar as its first graduate in 1983. Trainees were accepted every two years into the program until 2003, when the Division decided to start accepting trainees yearly to keep up with the growing demand for pediatric surgical services. Graduates of the PGH training program are distributed all over the country, serving the pediatric surgical needs of our countrymen. The program is proud of the leadership prowess of its graduates, of whom more than 90% are fellows of the PSPS. As a result, in 2019, for the first time ever, the PSPS granted the much coveted five year accreditation to the PGH Pediatric Surgery training program.
